Description:
This course introduces the essentials
of Spanish necessary for oral and written use of the language. Gives practice in speaking, reading
understanding, and writing as well as introducing Spanish culture. The emphasis
in this 1st year is on understanding and speaking. I use writing as a tool for comprehension and
learning.
This course is for beginning level
students with a wide range of interests and linguistic experiences, and with
diverse career goals.
The primary focus of the 2nd year of
Spanish is to develop your ability to understand native spoken and written
Spanish and to develop skill at expressing yourself in basic conversations
through carefully designed and linked activities in the classroom and at home. Listening comprehension and reading are the
basis for the sound acquisition of a foreign language.
Student
learning outcomes:
1.
The student will engage in basic
conversations.
2.
The student will write basic sentences,
3.
The student will read and interpret
written texts.
4.
The student will demonstrate an
understanding of the practices and values of the cultures studied.
Methods:
The student
will be involved in oral and written exercises either on his own or with other
students in the classroom or with the teacher.
Practice outside of the classroom is very useful. In addition to speaking, writing, and
listening, the student will explore cultural perspectives through directed
strategies. Various texts will be resources,
but taped material, handouts, teacher made activities, internet sites and video
programs will be used. I’m always trying to explore and find better ways to
learn.
Evaluation:
There will be exams over studied topics,
periodic quizzes and daily assignments and activities in this course. Students
will also be required to video or audio tape various communicative situations.
The points will be added to give the student a
grade. If you miss class, you will miss
the points for the day so it behooves you to be on time and in class. You
can do the assignments if you miss them in class but they are much easier to do
if you do them in class. There
are two components to the final grade.
Fifty percent of the final grade is the average of the assignments and
quizzes. The other fifty percent is the average of all of the tests.
Classroom management:
I will have
bins for handing in assignments, graded assignments and for items you have
missed when being absent. It is your responsibility to get with me to hand in
missing work. I am available during
reading time or before school for helping you to make up missing work.
I keep all
of the graded assignments until the quarter is over so if an assignment is
“lost” we can look through all of the assignments in the big pile. I hand back
to you the tests that are taken.
We do most
of the communicative work in class. You will have to study at home before the
tests in order to get a good grade.
Attendance:
The
attendance policy is the same as the high school policy.

Grading:
Percentage
or letter grades are given. Grades are
not based on a curve. All assignments,
quizzes and assignments have a point total assigned to them. When the final grade is calculated all of the
semester’s points are taken into account.
Points will be deducted if these components are not completed. Subjective evaluation of class participation
and overall effort is taken into account in the final grade.
A=100-90,
B=89-80, C=79-70, D= 69-60, F=59 & below.
